✈️ JetBlue's Struggles, IHG's Richest Credit Card Deal & 'Singles Tax' on Flights
Hello, miles and points enthusiasts! Welcome to another episode of the Miles & Points Daily Podcast. I'm your host, Lucas, and I've got to tell you - my wallet is getting so full of credit cards that I'm considering hiring a personal assistant just to help me keep track of my minimum spending requirements. But hey, those sweet, sweet signup bonuses are worth the occasional back pain from sitting on a George Costanza wallet, am I right?
Today we've got some fascinating airline developments, an incredible new credit card offer, and some glimpses into the future of premium air travel. So let's dive right in!
First up, a trend that solo travelers need to be aware of. Several airlines are now implementing what essentially amounts to a 'singles tax' on certain routes. Delta Air Lines has quietly added fare rules that require travelers to be accompanied by at least one other passenger to qualify for their lowest fares on select routes. In some cases, solo travelers are being charged up to seventy percent more than if they brought along a companion. And it's not just Delta - this practice appears to be spreading across the industry.
If you're a solo traveler, my recommendation is to always check prices for both one and two passengers. If you notice a significant difference, it might be worth reaching out to the airline directly to ask about this pricing discrepancy. Also, consider booking through online travel agencies which might not have implemented these new fare rules yet.
In credit card news, IHG has just launched what they're calling their 'richest credit card deal ever' for the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card. New cardholders can earn five free night awards worth up to a total of three hundred thousand points. That's more than double the value of their previous offer! Each free night certificate is worth up to sixty thousand points, giving you tremendous flexibility to book at some of IHG's most luxurious properties.
This card comes with automatic Platinum Elite status, a fourth night free on award stays, and up to a ten thousand dollar credit toward earning Diamond status. If you're interested in this incredible offer, you can apply by clicking the link in our shownotes. The card does have an annual fee of ninety-nine dollars, but the benefits far outweigh this cost, especially with this unprecedented signup bonus.
For those who prefer a no-annual-fee option, the IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card is also offering an enhanced limited-time welcome offer of one hundred and twenty thousand bonus points. This is also available through our link in the shownotes.
In airline news, JetBlue's CEO Joanna Geraghty recently made some candid admissions about the company's struggles. In a message to employees, she acknowledged that 'we're not winning' and noted that morale has collapsed across the company. Flight attendants, pilots, and corporate employees are all feeling demoralized as the airline faces significant financial challenges. JetBlue has been struggling with profitability since the pandemic, and the current management team is trying to right the ship amid intense competition.
Speaking of JetBlue, they've just announced a major partnership with United Airlines called 'Blue Sky.' This partnership includes a frequent flyer linkup and a slot trade that will allow United to return to JFK Airport. This is a strategic move that could reshape the competitive landscape in New York. United customers will be able to earn and use miles on JetBlue flights, and vice versa, creating more flexibility for travelers loyal to either airline.
On a more positive note, American Airlines is set to debut its new Boeing 787-9P aircraft with all-new interiors. I've seen early images, and let me tell you, it's impressive. The plane features fifty-one business class suites with sliding doors, significantly enhancing privacy for premium travelers. There's unprecedented attention to detail throughout the cabin, including a patented 'comfort position' and lighting details never before seen on a U.S. airline.
However, it's worth noting that this premium-heavy configuration comes at a cost - there's reduced legroom in both coach and premium economy compared to American's existing 787-9 fleet. So while business class passengers will enjoy a fantastic new product, those in other cabins might feel a bit more squeezed. The new plane will initially fly between Chicago and Los Angeles before being deployed on international routes like Chicago to London.
In hotel news, Hilton has just opened a luxury property near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Sax Paris, part of Hilton's LXR Hotels & Resorts collection, is located in the 7th Arrondissement on the Left Bank. What's exciting for points enthusiasts is that you can book this luxury property from just one hundred and ten thousand Hilton Honors points per night. Given the typically high cash rates for luxury hotels in Paris, this represents an excellent value for your points.
And now, I'd like to take a moment to tell you about our sponsor. Looking for the best award flights? Use AwardTravelFinder.com to search availability across Qatar Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and more. Try it for free with our link in the shownotes.
